Google Business Profile fields that affect discovery

A field by field pass through the Business Profile, what each one does for discovery, and which ones clinics routinely get wrong.

Short answer

The Business Profile fields that most affect discovery are the primary category, the additional categories and the services attached to them, because those determine which searches the profile is eligible for. Name, address, hours, attributes and the website URL determine whether the listing is trusted and correct. Photos, posts and answered questions affect engagement rather than eligibility.

The Business Profile is the input to the local pack and to Maps, and unlike a website it is a form. Every field has a defined purpose, and a clinic that fills the form carelessly is competing with one that filled it deliberately. This article works through the fields in order of how much they affect discovery.

Google Business Profile

HIGH CONTROL
What controls it
  • Name, address, phone, website URL and appointment link
  • Primary category, additional categories and the services list
  • Opening hours, special hours, attributes and the business description
  • Photos, posts, products and the questions the business answers itself
What does not
  • Whether the profile is shown for a query
  • Public edits, review content and the star average they produce
  • Whether an appeal against a suspension succeeds
How to test it
  • Read the profile back as a member of the public, not as the owner
  • Check every field against the guidelines for representing a business
  • Confirm the website URL resolves without a redirect chain

Business name

The name must be the real-world name of the business, as used consistently on signage, stationery and the website. Adding a treatment term or a town to gain relevance is a guidelines violation, it is reportable by competitors, and it puts the listing at risk. It is also the field most often inconsistent with the rest of the web, which undermines entity resolution.

Pick the exact string once. Use it on the profile, in the page title of the location page, in your structured data name property, on every directory listing and on the Companies House record if the trading name matches. Character for character.

Primary category

This is the highest-leverage field on the profile. The primary category is a strong determinant of which searches the profile is eligible to appear for, and clinics frequently sit in a category that describes what they look like rather than what they do. A medical aesthetics practice categorised as a beauty salon is competing in the wrong set.

Choose the category that most accurately describes the primary business. Accuracy is the standard, not ambition: a category you do not qualify for is a guidelines problem, and a category that is too broad wastes the eligibility it grants.

Additional categories

Additional categories broaden eligibility. Add every category that genuinely applies and none that does not. The usual clinic error is adding twelve loosely related categories on the theory that more is better, which dilutes the profile's apparent focus, and the opposite error of adding none, which leaves whole query families unreachable.

Services

Services sit underneath categories and let you name what you actually offer, with a short description each. This is free text you control, it is read by the systems assembling local results, and most clinics leave it empty. Fill it with the treatments you genuinely provide, described in the words patients use rather than in clinical shorthand, and keep it current when the service mix changes.

Address and service area

The address must be a real location staffed during your stated opening hours. Virtual offices, mailboxes and a colleague's spare room are not eligible, and listings built on them are the ones that get suspended. If you travel to patients rather than seeing them at an address, set a service area instead and be accurate about it.

Hours, special hours and holidays

Hours affect whether the listing is shown as open, which affects clicks, and inaccurate hours are among the most common causes of a poor first impression. Set special hours for bank holidays in advance. A profile that says open when the door is locked produces exactly the review you do not want.

Website URL and appointment link

Point the website field at the page that describes that location, not at the group homepage, and make sure the URL resolves directly without a redirect chain. If an online booking route exists, use the appointment link field rather than burying it, because it gives patients a path that does not depend on finding the right page.

Attributes

Attributes are structured facts: accessibility, parking, payment methods, appointment requirements, languages spoken and, for healthcare, factors patients screen on. They are the cheapest completeness available and they answer real questions. Accessibility attributes in particular are the difference between a patient with a mobility need contacting you and quietly moving on.

Business description

The description is a short piece of prose about the business. Its effect on ranking is limited and its effect on the reader is not. Write it as a plain statement of what the clinic does, who it treats and what makes it specific, in the language patients use. Keyword stuffing here is visible, unhelpful and against the spirit of the guidelines.

Photos

Photographs of the actual premises, the exterior and the entrance help people find the door, which is the practical job of Maps. Interior photographs set expectations. Photographs of treatments and results are governed by advertising rules and professional standards, so check the applicable position before publishing anything clinical, particularly anything that could be read as promoting a prescription-only medicine.

Questions and answers

The Q and A section is public and anyone can answer. A question left unanswered for months is answered eventually by someone who does not work at the clinic. Monitor it, answer as the business, and seed the obvious questions yourself: parking, accessibility, consultation fees, whether a referral is needed, what happens at a first appointment.

Posts and updates

Posts appear on the profile and expire. They are a communication surface rather than a ranking one, and treating them as a ranking lever produces a stream of thin content nobody reads. Use them for things with a date: a new practitioner, changed hours, a service now available.

Spend the first hour on categories and services, the second on making name, address, hours and the website URL agree with the site and with every directory, and the third on attributes and the Q and A section. That order reflects what each field actually does.

Own the profile properly

Verify ownership in an account the clinic controls, not an agency's personal account, and keep at least two owners so access survives staff changes. Losing access to a verified profile is a disproportionately painful problem to recover from, and it is entirely preventable with two minutes of administration.

Frequently asked questions

Can we add our town to the business name to rank locally?

No. The guidelines require the real-world business name. Adding location or keyword terms is a violation, is reportable, and puts the listing at risk. Use the address, categories and services to establish local relevance instead.

How many additional categories should a clinic add?

Every category that genuinely applies to services you actually deliver, and none that does not. For most clinics that is a handful rather than a dozen.

Does the business description affect ranking?

Its effect is limited compared with categories and services. It is read by people deciding whether to contact you, so write it for them.

Should the website field point at the homepage?

For a single-site clinic that is fine. For a group, point it at the page describing that specific location, and make sure the URL resolves without a redirect.

Who can answer questions on our profile?

Anyone. That is why unanswered questions are a risk. Monitor the section, answer as the business, and pre-empt the obvious questions yourself.
